False Breakout | Trading Strategy (Setup & Exit 2)
I. Trading Strategy
Developer: Richard Wyckoff & Larry Williams (entry); Laurence A. Connors (setup). Concept: Trading strategy based on false breakouts. Research Goal: Performance verification of the pattern setup and trailing exit. Specification: Table 1. Results: Figure 1-2. Trade setup: Long Trades: The market makes a new 2o-bar low (new breakout bar). The previous 20-bar low (old breakout bar) has been made at least 5 bars earlier. The close of the current 20-bar low (new breakout bar) must be at or below the previous 20-bar low (old breakout bar). Short Trades: The market makes a new 2o-bar high (new breakout bar). The previous 20-bar high (old breakout bar) has been made at least 5 bars earlier. The close of the current 20-bar high (new breakout bar) must be at or above the previous 20-bar high (old breakout bar). In the sensitivity test, the default value “20-bar” is replaced by an interval “Channel_#1” (Table 1). Trade Entry: Long Trades: The next bar after the setup (i.e. potential false breakout), a buy stop is placed one tick above the high of the new breakout bar (defined in setup). The time interval between the new breakout bar and the long entry is less than 5 bars. Short Trades: The next bar after the setup (i.e. potential false breakout), a sell stop is placed one tick below the low of the new breakout bar (defined in setup). The time interval between the new breakout bar and the short entry is less than 5 bars. Trade Exit: Table 1. Portfolio: 42 futures markets from four major market sectors (commodities, currencies, interest rates, and equity indexes). Data: 32 years since 1980. Testing Platform: MATLAB®.
II. Sensitivity Test
All 3-D charts are followed by 2-D contour charts for Profit Factor, Sharpe Ratio, Ulcer Performance Index, CAGR, Maximum Drawdown, Percent Profitable Trades, and Avg. Win / Avg. Loss Ratio. The final picture shows sensitivity of Equity Curve.
